PARTICIPATIVE GARDEN PROJECT BY MIRKO NIKOLIĆ AT ECOISMI 2012
WITH ASSISTANCE OF IL FOLLETTO VERDE AND WITH HELP OF 17 GARDENER/MAPPERS

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Maps are usually perceived as interfaces located in flat space, on paper or on screen, disconnected from the space they represent. Therefore, they are as inanimate objects which try to tell us something about an essentially animated world. In line, human settlements they represent come to be imagined as objects, built environments made of concrete, asphalt, glass, etc. Garden Map of Cassano d'Adda tries to make present that our settlements are not just complexes of houses, instead they are ecologies, living systems made of people who are in inextricable and complex mutual relationship with grander ecosystems. There is no discontinuity between ecosystems and our urban systems, but their unity is not given. At this moment, it greatly depends on our care, which should be practised everyday both individually and collectively. To make this real, our digital networking structures can act as an instrument of organisation. Garden map is, in that sense, an index of this society – ecosystem interdependence, and, in the identical way, it relies entirely on our care to be able to grow and bloom.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

The garden is planted during the days of the installation of Ecoismi 2012 artworks, from May 23 to May 26. Subsequently, after the show opening on May 27, up until the end of the exhibition on September 23, Garden Map is entrusted to the care of the show visitors. Since the Garden Map has a complex structure, involving ten different kinds of plants, and especially because the period of its life is during the summer months, it requires quite an organised gardening activity. For that reason, this site acts as a platform for organisation of gardening activities. To participate in this activity, it is easy to register on the page GET INVOLVED. The calendar on that page is for illustrative purpose only, it should help the willing 'gardeners' to better distribute their visits. Naturally, as far as it is possible for me, I will be making my rounds, too. Moreover, if you happen to visit the show, you can find Cassano d'Adda Garden Map cards. They have a calendar page on their back, and this way can be used to register for gardening, too. Maybe it is nicer to keep the card, (with the date marked as a memo) and to simply send me an e-mail so I can update the online calendar.

After having engaged in gardening activities, it would be also very kind of you to share your experience with others, and it can be done by sending a piece of text, maybe with images, too, via the WRITE ON GARDEN MAP page or simply by e-mailing me on post@giardinomappa.it. Thank you for your participation!

THE GARDEN MAP LAYOUT

The Garden Map was created by using several types of plants. I have used their different colours to convey different functions of some city areas. Rose and red flower begonias stand for residential zones, the white ones indicate industrial and commercial areas. The yellow flower tagetes are public buildings, and the orange ones are historical monuments. Lastly, alyssums, purple and violet ones, stand for cemeteries. The map of the project, with the disposition of flowers, is below.

HOW TO VISIT CASSANO D'ADDA GARDEN MAP

This page explains perfectly how to visit Ecoismi 2012 show. After you arrive at Cassano d'Adda, you should search for Piazza Garibaldi, which is only a couple of hundred meters away from the island. Once on the island, it is probably best to delve in free exploration of the beautiful nature (the island is part of natural park Adda nord) and of the artworks. In case you don't find the Garden Map, here is the map which could help.
